On the Run – A running column for the Mount Washington Valley
The Kennett High Track and Field Meet scheduled for April 26 was canceled due a snowstorm. Really. Paul Kirsch reported that the Nordic Ski Team was waxing their skis. The next scheduled Kennett High track and field meet on May 10 needs your help. Please contact Coach Bernie Livingston firstname.lastname@example.org for more information. Help is needed with timing, measuring distances for field events and general support. I’ve had so much fun working these events and meeting some wonderful young people in the valley, and also other volunteers.
Joe LaRue recently participated in the GoRuck 26.2 mile trip around Lincoln and Concord, Mass. Previously run on Patriots Day within the Boston Marathon, the race officials would not allow the GoRuck Backpacks in the race after the bombing. At that time, the ruck had been open to military personnel only to honor the fallen — U.S. MIlitary as well as fire, police and emergency medical services. With moving the run to the Saturday before the marathon, the Ruck was open to all and Joe signed up. Temperatures were pretty nice for a 26.2 mile run/walk with a 30 pound back back. Joe says, “Perhaps I found my niche. ToughRuck today – 26.2 miles w/ 30# ruck – 6:02:34 official time. 7th place.” Good niche to find, Joe. More on the race may be found at bostonglobe.com/metro/2016/04/16.
Leslie O’Dell reports this year’s Boston was one of the tougher Boston’s she’s run. Leslie was limited in her mileage because of an injury leading up to the spring races. The warm weather in Hopkinton surprised many of the runners. Leslie said her goal was to finish but she felt so good with her 3:09 finish that she is already looking forward to next year. “I usually only do it every other year, but I don’t know if I can wait for two years!” she reported.
Of course, as you will see below, Leslie’s post-marathon recovery plan included winning a 5-mile race in Bethlehem less than a week later!
I spoke with Linda Parish’s husband Bob, before the marathon, and he reported Linda had been nursing an ankle injury pre-marathon. Her daughter, Ana, reported Linda did more walking in this year’s marathon but was so happy to see her family along the course and managed to finish running. I understand Linda took a few days off after Boston, more in line with my kind of recovery!
Ammonoosuc Ramble took place on Saturday, April 23, in Bethlehem. Ninety walkers and 101 runners took part in the 5-mile race. Center Conway’s Kevin Tilton placed second overall in 28:18, finishing in 32:49 was Albany’s Leslie O’Dell, first Woman, and 10th overall. I heard Kevin Callahan was there and had a good run but I couldn’t find his name in the results. However, I did find that Colon Scopy finished in 48:29.
The children of Maggie Solomon, Sharon Neely and Matthew Clarke, extend a “Save the Date,” July 17, for a celebration of Maggie’s Amazing Life. Details are still being organized and more information will follow.

“If you don’t ever stop singing, your voice stays in shape. It’s like the marathon runner. You’ve got to run, run, run to stay in shape.” — Sammy Hagar
