On the Run

The White Mountain Milers Julbo Summer Series started this week with more than 40 people running and walking the trails at Whitaker Woods. Remember, these fun runs take place every Tuesday night at 5:30 at Whitaker Woods, and they are open to runners and walkers. There’s a shorter walking course option available and it’s free!  Come out and play, meet some new friends, and join the Milers Family!

I missed the first week of the Summer Series to attend the Scholarship Night at Kennett High School. A large part of fundraising of the White Mountain Milers is for our Gretchen B. Hatch Scholarship Fund. Martha (Hatch) Leich, Gretchen’s daughter, and I were honored to attend the Scholarship Night.

Each year, our scholarships are awarded to students who participate in track and field and cross country and some run indoor track in the winter months. These student athletes are also community oriented and have worked with the White Mountain Milers at a water stop at the Half Marathon, our largest fundraiser.  This year, we awarded four scholarships to Julianna Livingston, Cameron Labrie, Isabelle Forde and  Kyle O’Keefe.  I wish these students best of luck in their college careers and hope to see them on the run.

The Flying Falcon 5K was run on Saturday, May 22,  in Whitaker Woods. The 1K fun run was won in 4:54 by Jackson Burke and Haylee Burke in 5:58.First male in the 5K  in 19.16 was John Lamneck, and first female in 28.05 was Jane Chauvin.

The Dirty Girl Trail Run saw 128 finishers in the race on Saturday, June 4, under sunny skies at Tin Mountain in Albany. There was a glitch in the directions during the race and although runners did go off course, everyone said they would be back next year for this all women’s race. Race Director Leslie O’Dell thanks all volunteers for their help with the race and looks forward to next year. Full race results may be found at coolrunning.com.

Black Fly in My Eye 10 MIle Trail Run was held on Saturday, June 4, at Great Glen Trails. The course is a three-loop trek with carriage roads, single track, boggy and muddy sections, water and river crossings, oh, and a few hills. A real New Hampshire trail run.
