On The Run

On Sunday, July 17th, please join with family and friends to Celebrate the Life of Maggie Solomon. The event will take place from Noon to 2:00 PM at Zip’s Pub at the base of Mount Cranmore. Maggie was a fitness instructor and regular at Cranmore and frequent runner and skier on the mountain. A light lunch will be served, a cash bar, a sharing of Maggie Stories, and a short hike up the mountain to share Maggie’s ashes with the place she loved so well. Please RSVP to Maggie’s son, Matthew by email by July 13 for the luncheon at mclarke@contractorsuretygroup.com

The Summer Series has seen a total of 117 runners so far this summer.  This number represents people who have run or walked at least one of the series. Ages are from 6 to infinity and abilities from walkers to very fast runners.  The winning time thus far is 17:14 by Tristan Williams.  Come join the White Mountain Milers for this free 5K Run and Walk or 2 mile walk or 1 mile kids course in Whitaker Woods on Tuesdays at 5:30 P.M., rain or shine. You can also purchase the new White Mountain Miler Hats at the run!

Don’t forget to check out Cranmore Hill Climb this weekend.  Named Outside Magazine’s Ultimate Race 2015, the race draws runners from near and far.  You can still register the day of the race, Sunday, July 10, at 7:30 A.M. and pick up your race bib at Zip’s Pub at the base of Cranmore.  This year’s course is 10Km, two 5km laps up and down the mountain.  FMI whitemountainmilers.com.

Gossip, Lies, Rumors, and Truths:  I forgot to mention in last week’s column that Joe Larue “rucked” the Lubec International Half Marathon, carrying thirty pounds in a backpack plus my long sleeve t-shirt which I discarded at the start.  Jim Soroka has a new title as Doggie Doo-Doo Officer of the White Mountain Milers.  He sprang to action to put a traffic cone by the offensive trail marking to warn everyone at the Tuesday Whitaker Woods Run. Great job, Jim!Many runners ran the Loon Mountain Race and the Bridgton 4 on the 4th or the Ordination Rock 5K in Tamworth. Those are great cool-down runs after a mountain race.

In the time it took to run the Summer Run on Tuesday, our Bucks for Bernie Team had a member drop out and a new runner take her place.  The trading is more exciting and faster than the NFL Draft!  Team RIOT now has a full roster and it’s not too late to form a team of your own.  Check out the action on White Mountain MIlers Facebook and website.

Local Reach the Beach Relay Teams have been forming and holding team meetings getting ready for the September 16 and 17 Relay.  This group includes Jenny Burkett and Laura Holtby who are doing both overnight events, B4B and RTB. Run, Drive, Sleep?, Repeat, is the Ragnar Mantra.  At least at the Buck for Bernie we leave out the Drive part, unless it’s to go for a quick swim or food run!
