The Midnight Owl 15K is being run this weekend. This is a prediction run which starts from the train station at whatever time you think will get you the 9.3 miles to the Ham Arena at midnight. So, if you think you’ll run a 2 hour 15K (9.3 miles), you need to leave the train station at 10:00 P.M. You must wear a reflective vest and head lamp or carry a flashlight for safety sake, and leave your watch at home. Hopefully the weather will cooperate for a nearly full moon lighting. If you can’t run the prediction race, please consider helping out. To volunteer please contact Race Director Madeleine Bedard-Ryan at firstname.lastname@example.org or call 603 986-1650. More information available at whitemountainmilers.com and for a pace chart, see coolrunning.com/engine/4/4_1/96.shtml
The Madison Old Home Day’s Race, the JIm Wellinghurst Memorial 5K, will take place on Tuesday August 9, at 5:30, with the start at the Church in Madison. This run takes the place of the Summer Series in Whitaker Woods for that evening. This is a fun race run on tar and dirt roads with some rolling hills and snacks at the finish line. See whitemountainmilers.com for more information.
It’s that time of year already, time for the Kennett Challenge Cross Country Run. This annual event mixes it up with Cross Country Runners from Kennett High School, Fryeburg Academy, and the White Mountain Milers. This is an open invitation to everyone to attend, run, spectate and eat! Please bring a dessert to share and enjoy sandwiches provided by the White Mountain Milers. The cross country course behind Kennett Middle School is the site of the Challenge and starts at 5:30.
The Summer Series Week 6 just concluded with another warm summer night run. Results may be found on the White Mountain MIlers Facebook page. The trash talk between the runners, the walkers and spectators is just part of the fun of this series. Some dish it, others take it very well and some people can give and take! For true trash, this week, July 19, following the run, there will be a trash pick up along the White Mountain Milers Adopted Route along River Road and Old West Side Road to the Bartlett Town Line. Please consider helping as many hands make light work says our Trash Queen, Catherine Kyle. There’s also the optional dip in the river at First Bridge before and after the pick up.
Please don’t forget to be at Zip’s on Sunday, July 17th, to join with family and friends to Celebrate the Life of Maggie Solomon.
The event will take place from Noon to 2:00 PM at Zip’s Pub at the base of Mount Cranmore.
Maggie was a fitness instructor and regular at Cranmore and frequent runner and skier on the mountain. She was once President of the White Mountain Milers and an inspiration to all who knew her.
A light lunch will be served if you RSVP’d, a cash bar, a sharing of Maggie Stories, and a short hike up the mountain to share Maggie’s ashes with the place she loved so well
Congratulations to Kevin Tilton of Conway for winning the Bradbury Scuffle 6 Mile Trail Run on Sunday, July 10, in Pownal, Maine. Kevin finished the run in 38:26. Kevin Callahan of Eaton also made the trek over the border and finished in 1:11:45. The race saw 160 finishers and I love their post on Facebook, “What happens if it rains on race day? We splash through the puddles like a bunch of 4 year olds and have even more fun than we expected.”
The Millen Mile is coming up and Coach Bernie Livingston is looking for runners for this event. This is a mile race, run on the Livingston Oval at Kennett High School, under the lights at halftime of a home football game. The date is pending but please contact Coach Bernie at email@example.com
“We may train or peak for a certain race, but running is a lifetime sport.” –Alberto Salazar, winner of NCAA Cross Country Championship, broke the American indoor 5,000 meter record, qualified for 1980 Olympics, won the New York City Marathon 3 consecutive times, and Boston once, now coaches athletes for the Nike Oregon Project.
