On the Run 6/22/16 Mount Washington

On The Run  06/22/16

The 56th running of the Mount Washington Road Race was run under sunny skies and moderate temps making for magnificent views on Saturday, June 18. Local athletes were in good company with runners from all over the world running and walking the 7.6-mile hill.   The White Mountain Milers man the registration and T-shirt area from 6 a.m. until race start at 9 a.m. It’s always so much fun to talk and meet other runners from all over the world and work out our own pre-race jitters.

As we lined up to start, there was a moment of silence for Barbara Robinson of Franconia who had run Mount Washington many times. Barbara still holds the female 70-74 age group record of 2:00:42 from 2004. We then heard the Star Spangled Banner sung by a young local woman and then we were reminded to brush and floss your teeth and free toothbrushes were provided to all runners from Northeast Delta Dental, a main sponsor of the race. The race began with the official firing of the cannon by Auto Road Manager Howie Wemyss.

I ran with my daughter, Laura Holtby, for a very short distance and didn’t see her again until she greeted me at the top of the rockpile.

One of the highlights of the day was George Etzweiler finishing his ninth Mount Washington race in a time of 3:23:15. George was accompanied by his son and grandson, all in the masters age category. In his post race speech, Etzweiler revealed than he trained for the race by hiring a personal trainer. You think you are too old to exercise?

It was great to see Roger Marcoux and Heather Leach of Dragonfly Aerials out on the road along with race photographer Joe Viger of Joe Viger Photography. Joe has photos of everyone who ran the rockpile. You can peruse and purchase photos on his website, joeviger.com. Many of our White Mountain Milers and friends were volunteering on the mountain parking cars and made it very special by cheering for everyone on that last 100-yard, 22-percent  grade hill! It did wonders for my spirits as I rounded that last corner.

Thank you to White Mountain Miler Clothing Czar Frank Holmes for setting up a recovery tent for the White Mountain Milers complete with refreshments, where we could enjoy our post-race turkey dinner from Hart’s Turkey Farm.

Thank you to Lloyd Jones who posted all the locals who ran the race in the Tuesday edition. The White Mountain Milers took team awards in:

Ewa Johnson ran the Vegan Power 15K Trail Race  this past weekend and placed 4th place in the female division, 13th overall. The race was in Northhampton, Mass., and Ewa is already looking forward to running faster next year! I’m really excited that Ewa has joined our Bucks for Bernie Team for 2016. Last years SWATT (Sprinters, Walkers and Trash Talkers) Team is now Team RIOT, Running Is Our Therapy. Looking forward to Aug. 12 and 13. There’s still time to line up a team. Check out the event on the White Mountain Milers Facebook or Website.

Madeleine Ryan wants to remind everyone that the price for entry in the MIdnight Owl Race will increase as of July 1, and if you would like to guarantee a T-shirt, please register by the first. This is a prediction run, anyone can win, and the first 5 who finish this 15K closest to midnight will!

Since she can’t run her own race, on the weekend of June 4/5, Madeleine did back to back half marathons; the Sandhills half marathon on Saturday in Valentine, Neb., and the Deadwood Mickelson Half Marathon in Deadwood, S.D. Ryan is trying to run a race in all 50 states and this finished numbers 42 and 43!

Good Luck to Lois Hatch of North Conway and friends on running/walking the Bay of Fundy Marathon in Lubec, Maine. The marathon and half marathon begin in Maine, cross the International Bridge into Canada, and finish back in Maine. Don’t forget your passport, Lois, as it will prove that you are completing this race in your new age group, the 80 years young and older female division.

“Experienced runners learn to respect the changing needs of their bodies. That’s the wisdom that comes with time, and for good or bad, with age.”  — Fred Lebow, founder of New York City Marathon.
