On The Run 06/29/16
After a 5 hour drive north, we finally arrived in Lubec, Maine to meet up with other White Mountain Milers to run the Bay of Fundy International Marathon and Half Marathon. We then had to pick up our goodie bag, a bait bag, and take our passports and head over the border to Campobello Island, Canada. We had our passports checked by Border Patrol, and picked up our bib numbers, where I switched from the full marathon to the half with my foot injury. We then sampled our first lobster roll and headed back over to the states through border patrol for an early dinner and sleep to be ready for an early race start. Many in our group were running/walking the marathon and elected to do the early start in the U.S. at 5:30 A.M. Others, myself included, went to the buses at 6:00 A.M. to catch the bus to Canada for our 8 A.M. start for the half marathon. Now is that 8:00 EST or UTC Time Zone? This was not only an international race but also different time zones!
This was one of the hilliest races I’ve ever run, but it was also one of the prettiest with views of the oceans around every corner. The volunteers on the course were so friendly and supportive, they made the race fun. Our own Linda Walker of North Conway was there to support us, but joined the volunteers to give out coffee at the early start and then water at the finish line.
The real story of this race, or stories, is that this race was chosen by Catherine Kyle when Lois Hatch decided to complete a marathon for her 80th birthday. Word spread quickly and a total of nine people made the trek with Lois to show their support. By the end of Lois’s 26.2 mile trek, she had the support of everyone along the marathon route and the town of Lubec. By the time she left Lubec, Lois owned the town and we threatened to leave her there to run for mayor! The other side of this story is that we all wore a sprig of rosemary to honor our dear friend, Rosemary Good. Acting as coach for many of the group in their first marathon in Disney, Rosemary was an inspiration to all and continues to be remembered daily. Thank you, Rosemary, and congratulations to Lois and her posse! You did good, Coach Good!

One other highlight of the trip to Lubec was meeting up with former valley residents and White Mountain Milers for Life, Pat Fry and Gary Howard. Gary and Pat were avid runners with Gary becoming president of the Milers and Director of the Half Marathon for many years. They are living the life in Lubec, painting, gardening, and then golfing and cross country skiing over the border on Campobello Island.
Seems quite a few local runners traveled to Maine this weekend for races. Congratulations to Albany’s Leslie O’Dell for winning the Road Runners Club of America Maine State 10 Mile Championship at the Falmouth Five & Dime Trail Race! Finishing in 1:27:01 for the 10 mile trail championship good for 6th place overall and first female. Leslie just keeps getting faster!
Steve Dowling joined his daughter and son-in-law for the 200 Mile Rock Lobster Relay, travelling and running from Bar Harbor to Portland Maine. Steve’s team, Team Joey, was raising money for 4-year-old Joey O’Neill, in his fight with cancer. Team Joey is very close to their $20,000 goal to help Joey and his family with mounting medical bills. Crowdwise.com hosts the fundraising site.
