New Races for 2017

On The Run

The White Mountain Milers are very busy during the winter months planning for spring and summer races.

Race Director, Joann Daly of Soyfire Candle is looking for help with a new event this spring– the  Feelin’Good 5K to be held starting at 9:30 on April 8 from Schouler Park in conjunction with the MWV Chamber of Commerce Chili Cook-off.   Joann is looking for two people to help join her team, 1.) A volunteer coordinator and 2.) A race course manager to help with setting up and taking down the course.  She also is in need of volunteers for registration, timing at the finish, the road crossings, and the course.  Please thank Joann by showing your support and welcome her to this new role.    She can be reached at

Hometown inspiration and extraordinary athlete, Jim Soroka, will be honored in name and spirit with a return of the “just up the hill” Cranmore Hill Climb in July being led by Steve Dowling, Frank Holmes and Gretchen Loeffler.   The race will recreate the traditional family friendly event starting from the North Lodge and climbing the service road to the top. Full details will be available at the annual meeting.

The Milers are also looking to fill three new 2 year officer positions:

Join with Bob Parrish as Youth Coordinator to create and support youth oriented running/walking events, promotions and help coordinate running activities with our schools and Memorial Hospital

Scholarship Coordinator to work with the guidance department at Kennett High School to identify eligible candidates, meet with the coaches and officers to decide on the awards and present these at the High School Scholarship Awards night.

Community Relations Coordinator needed to work with the Chamber of Commerce, other athletic clubs in the Valley and businesses to keep our name and events coordinated with other Valley activities and maximize our impact.

Club President Marianne Jackson concludes, “It is a delight to be serving as the President of this club that does so much, cares so much and eats so much.  Run on!”

No one can ever again use snow as an excuse for not running.  Quinn Schneider of North Carolina woke to eight inches of snow outside his home.  Rather than see this as a deterrent to his training, Quinn, a high school senior and State of North Carolina’s best boys cross country athlete of the year, was happy to see the snow.  He would take it as a challenge, a workout before the workout was as he shoveled off one of the lanes at Woodlawn School near Charlotte.  In his words, “All that work was so much better than having to run on a treadmill.”

Schneider thought rather than take the day off, he did what an Olympian would do.   “You’ve got to stay in your [training] routine,” he said. “If you get out of your routine, it’s not as effective.”

Mount Washington Road Race has sent along their guidelines for signing up for the 2017 race.  If you qualified for a bypass entry, you should have received an email which needs to be returned by Friday, February 10.  For those of us who did not qualify based on last year’s performance, we can register beginning Wednesday, February 15.  This random selection ends on Wednesday, March 1.  You will hear by Friday, March 3, if you made the cut and had better start training!  If you get a rejection email, you have one more chance to enter the race.

First, make sure you are a White Mountain Miler Member.  Second, come to our Annual Meeting on Tuesday, March 7, at 6:30 P.M. at Tuckerman Brewery.

Other information for Mount Washington is available at  Be sure to check out their race videos, some of  which feature amazing photography by our own White Mountain Miler Roger Marcoux of Bartlett and his Dragon Fly Company.
