If you registered for the Northeast Delta Dental Mount Washington Road Race, you should have heard yesterday if you are in. Let the training begin.   If you got the rejection email, you have one more chance to enter the race.

First, make sure you are a White Mountain Miler Member (and you can do this in the next step).  Second, come to the Milers Annual Meeting on Tuesday, March 7, at 6:30 P.M. at Tuckerman Brewery.  There will be pizza, White Mountain Milers Clothing for sale, beer specials, Miler Bumpah Stickers, social time with fellow athletes, raffles, 50-50 raffle, sign-up for membership, club race announcements, news, elections, and more!

Congratulations to the White Mountain Milers Half Marathon for being named to “The Best of 2016” Half Marathons by the 100 Half Marathon Club.  The 100 Half Marathons Club is a racing club that celebrates those who have achieved the accomplishment of completing 100 lifetime half marathons (or more), and encourages and supports those who are on the way to reaching this goal. You may have noticed a few people walking the roads around the valley wearing backpacks.  They are too “mature” to be heading to any of the SAU9 buildings as students and they may look like they’ve lost a hiking trail, but there’s a lot more to it.  There’s a growing group taking to the roads and trails and they are Rucking.

RUCK•ING [VERB]:  To put weight on your back and go for a walk. More weight or more miles equals more results, more friends and more time together equals more fun.

Rucking was founded by Jason McCarthy in 2008, when he found he needed something to fill in the missing team and support he had received while serving in Special Forces. His dog was a big part of getting him outside.  McCarthy and the many people who ruck, say that rucking makes you be more active, burn more calories (3 times the amount of walking), get stronger, improve posture, have a healthier heart, and join a community.

According to Jason, he started rucking and then started making special rucking gear. The rucksacks, made in USA, are designed to be high on your back and many have special pockets for weight plates from 10 lbs and up.  The gear didn’t sell, so he tried a rucking event and things just went crazy from there. They have a light ruck, tough ruck, and heavy ruck events.  All rucks are different distances, weights and challenges, not obstacles but challenges, more like boot camp.  From there, they’ve added Scavenger, and Navigator Events,  Zombies, and more.  

In this area, Dr. Rita Kostecke was the first person I heard of attending a ruck event.  Now she is serving in the U.S. Army.  Did rucking lead to a new career for the doctor?  Jean Brauel has started rucking and says, “I felt stronger and faster in my running.”  Jean also has noticed her body shape has changed )for the better) since she started rucking.   

Linda Dewey reports, “ I noted an improvement in my running speed–amazing what carrying around a little extra weight will do for your legs.  I also noticed improvement in my posture.  I would automatically stand up straighter while rucking due to the placement of the weights and how you carry the pack.  The improved posture followed through to everyday life.”

The person who got many of us into rucking didn’t want me to use his name, so I’ll call him “The Street”, and he has been to many rucking events.  He is also part of a group rucking the Tough Ruck on April 15, a 26.2 mile ruck being held in Concord, MA.   The group is comprised of military, first responders, and civilians whose sole purpose is to Ruck in honor and in memory of our Fallen and to raise money to help them and their families.  My East Branch Team of Laura Holtby, Brian Otis, and Bob Otis are up to a 14 mile ruck and have more training to go.  We are opting for the Light Ruck and have to carry a minimum of 15 pounds. Never too old and no excuses; Orville Rogers (99) & Dixon Hemphill (92) faced off in the Male 90 and over 60 meters at USA Track and Field Masters last weekend in Albuquerque. The 99-year-young Rogers won the event. 92-year-old Hemphill says he needs to “add to his training”.
