Summer Racing

On The Run      07/6/17

Happy Summer Happy Fourth of July!  There’s a lot of racing going on and a lot more on the agenda.

Sunday, July 9, is the return of the Original White Mountain Milers Cranmore Hill Climb 5k. This year’s 3.1-mile climb celebrates the life of the late Jim Soroka. Jim was an inspiration to anyone who knew him.  Always quick with a joke, smile, and trash talk, he is sorely missed.

All proceeds from the climb will be donated to the Gretchen B. Hatch Scholarship Fund.  This fund awarded $9,000 in scholarship Monday to six Kennett High School Seniors just this month, and has awarded over $50,000 in the past 10 years.

Registration and check-in opens at 7:30 AM at the Cranmore Arlberg Lodge and race time is 9 AM.  Awards will be given to age group winners for both walkers and runners. The first 100 entrants receive commemorative pint glass.  Post-race festivities include a breakfast of homemade granola with freshstrawberries, and an award ceremony featuring presentation of the first annual Jim Soroka Spirit Award. Information may be found at and there is day of race registration.  Come out and run in Jim’s Memory and though Jim’s hat of choice, straw hats are optional.

There’s still time to join or start your own team for the Bucks for Bernie’s Kids 24-Hour Relay. Contact Steve Dowling at  or on-line at to join the fun. The team I’m on just signed up it’s 10th member and we are deciding on a name and a “what to bring” list. Tops on my list are a good lounge chair for napping. We’re hoping for good weather, of course, but the relay happens rain or shine.  The proceeds from this relay go toward buying new uniforms for our local middle and high school running teams.

The Julbo White Mountain Milers Summer Race Series Week 5 returns this week, Tuesday, July 11.  Runner and walkers of all ages are invited to join the fun at Whitaker Woods at 5:30 race time.  Oh, and Kevin Callahan, you’re invited, too.  Hope to see you there.

The Spring Salomon race Series at Great Glen Trails concluded last week.  This is an 8 week series where you can run your choice of course lengths anytime on Thursdays between 3:30 and 6:30 PM.  The series winners were:  Tristan Williams and Margaret Graciano, open long course, Kolbe Delafontaine and Alyssa Delafontine, junior long course, Odd Bersvendsen and Laura Brocket, master long course.  If you are wishing you had run in the series, don’t despair.  Your can join in the Salomon Fall Trail Running/Walking Series, starting Thursday, September 7 through October 12 from 3:30 – 6:30 pm.  For more information and full race series results, go to

The Loon Mountain Race took place this year on Sunday, July 2, and once again, its reputation as one of the region’s toughest races was met.  Not only was the Walking Boss Trail still steep, it was very slick after the torrential rain of Saturday evening.  First place, first male was Noah Hoffman of West Lebanon in a time of 57:22. Local finishers were Andrew Doherty of Center Conway 1:09:42, Kevin Tilton, Conway  1:11:16, Austen Bernier, Albany, 1:12:26, Leslie O’Dell, Albany, 2nd female 1:17:38, Daniel Doherty, Center Conway 1:24:09, Scot Holt, North Woodstock, first declared White Mountain Miler 1:26:52, Michael St. Hilaire, Freedom, 1:31:18, Andrea Leonard, Framingham and Glen, 1:35:12, Ewa Johnson Sweden, ME, 1:38:13, Frank Holmes, Eaton 1:43:01, Victoria Weigold, Glen, 1:43:21, David McDermott, Fryeburg, 1:44:05, Bob Schor, Conway, 1:51:19, David Oedel, Macon, GA, and Madison, 1:52:37, Kerry Oedel, Macon and Madison, 1:58:16, Michelle Collier, Bedford 1:58:25, Rich Leonard Framingham and Glen, 2:01:38

There were 462 finishers in the race, and White Mountain Milers Men took fourth place in the team division, and Frank Holmes received a cash payout for his first place in his age group. I think Frank should buy breakfast at the Wednesday Breakfast Run!

White Mountain Miler Katja Fox of Wolfeboro took top honors at the 15th Annual Run for the Gym in Sanford.  Running in her White Mountain Shirt, Katja receives a $20 Gift Card from the club and 7-Eleven of North Conway.  Send in your race photo showing you at the race wearing Milers Clothing along with your top placing to and you, too, could be a Gift Card Winner!  Thank you to 7-Eleven North Conway for this great program.

The 41st Annual Bridgton 4 on the Fourth Race saw fast results for some local runners.  Silas Eastman of Chatham finished in 21:06, Madison’s Nick Brown 22:00, Darin Brown of Madison 24:05 first in age group, Anna Lastra of Bridgton and former FA Student 24:37, in at 26:37, Terry Ballou of Madison, 1st in age group, 29:19 Bill Reilly of Brownfield, 29:27 Kim Proulx of Conway, 1st in age group, 29:35 Michelle Henley of Madison, 33:58 Chris Ballou of Madison,  33:59 Rachel Murphy, Intervale, and 40:51 for past WMM and 82 years young, John Howe of Waterford Maine.

Don’t forget to sign up early by mail or online for every race you enter and, if you’re a White Mountain Miler, be sure to state this as your team name.  As in the Loon race, the computer will group you with your teammates and you can take away honors and/or prizes. Registering early also may guarantee a lower price than “day of” registrations, saves you time on race day, and usually guarantees a race t-shirt or, in the case of the Cranmore Race, a very special pint glass.
