On The Run

07/20/17

The USATF Mountain Ultra Trail executive committee has selected some of the nation’s top junior cross country, track, mountain, and trail runners to compete at the World Mountain Running Championships in Premana, Italy on July 30. Junior athletes range from age 16 to 19 and hail from Colorado, Utah, and Nebraska and will compete for Team USA.  Trail runner, Madison resident, and Past White Mountain Miler President Paul Kirsch will be supporting the team as Manager as he has done the past 4 years.

Paul states in American Trail Running Association; “We have had Junior medals 3 out of the last 4 years and this is a great opportunity for a junior athlete to represent their country.  I am very thankful to have the support of more and more coaches who really see the value in providing their athletes the chance to compete in a World Championship event.”  Go Paul and Team USA!

Not much time left but you could still start your own team for the Bucks for Bernie’s Kids 24-Hour Relay of July 28 and 29. The relay race is a fund raiser for Kennett High and Middle School Cross Country and Track Team Uniforms and takes place at the Livingston Oval at Kennett High School..  Can’t get a team together?  You could run solo.  Or, you could come and support us at the track anytime during the 24 hours.  We really appreciate snacks, drinks, and if it’s hot, popsicles are amazing!  Contact Steve Dowling at stevedowling86@gmail.com or sign up on-line at whitemountainmilers.com to join the fun.  The relay happens rain or shine.

The Julbo and Salomon White Mountain Milers Summer Race Series Week 6 saw over 80 runners and walkers on Tuesday.  The evening was another warm one and a lot of people headed for the river after the race.  Highlight of the race for the youngest racer, Jack Church, was the train running alongside the running trail.  I am walking the two mile course this year where you skip the first running mile and head up the hills.  The fastest runners like Tristan Williams, Tim Livingston and about 15 other runners  are catching me on the course and I’m starting to be able to tell who is coming up behind me by the sound of their foot fall and with some, their breathing. It makes me want to run again when they go past, but I’ve never been able to run that fast.  But, we’re all out there, together, running and walking, all ages, all abilities and paces, all enjoying the trails and each other.

Next week is the 7th of 8 official races and anyone who has run six of the eight races is eligible for prizes, Race time is 5:30 and everyone is encouraged to head over to Flatbread Pizza for the Jen’s Friends Fundraiser and rumor has it that Callahan is buying!  Hope to see you Tuesday!

The Millen Mile will be run on the Livingston Oval again this year at the Varsity Football Game halftime, on Friday, September 8.  Coach Bernie Livingston is looking for runners to toe the line under the lights.  Please contact Bernie at bernliv03818@yahoo.com

Congratulations to Terry Livingston Ballou of Center Conway on her first place female in the Lovell Old Home Days 5K held on Saturday.  Terry finished the race in 19:45. Chatham’s Silas Eastman won the race in 15:48. This was the 13th running of the Lovell Race and there were 105 finishers.

“Of all the paths you take in life, make sure a few of them are dirt.”  John Muir
