On The Run

Tuesday night running, or as some know it, the Tuesday Running Club,  continues at Whitaker Woods. Informal and fun running with a group, 5:30 PM, right Kevin Callahan?  People run or walk 2 or 3 miles and trash talk about it after.  Too much fun for free.  Hope to see you there and at Ron and Raylene’s 2017 Summer Party!

Thank you to Paul Kirsch, race director of the Great Glen 7km Trail Race for this race report on the race held Sunday, August 20.

Sean Doherty and his Mom, Mary, head out on the Great Glen Trails.                                       Sean and Frank Holmes, 70+ Winner.    Joe LaRue is all smiles with his race “win”!

Close to 50 people came out to support Sean Doherty and run the beautiful trails of Great Glen on Sunday. Sean, our local Olympic Biathlete, is training hard for the upcoming World Cup and Olympic season. He made the trek over from Lake Placid to come out to the race and run the course with his family too.  Over $1500 was raised and was only possible through the generous support of Great Glen Trails, the White Mountain Milers, Big Dave’s Bagels, Moat Mountain Brewing Company and Memorial Hospital and all of the race participants.
I like to joke that this race has the best participant to raffle prize ratio of any race in the country and this year didn’t disappoint with raffle prizes of cool biathlon jackets and gear along with a bunch of additional gear from Fischer skis.
While not intentionally planned to be on the same date, the race was also the one year anniversary of Jim Soroka’s passing and several of us were looking up at the sun peering through the clouds and thinking that Jim was happily looking down to see another Miler gathering to support a local athlete.
The White Mountain Milers had a strong showing with Susan Laughland winning, followed by Kim Proulx. They also did well in the age division awards including VP Frank Holmes winning the 70 and over division.  We look forward to another race again next year and hope to see even more Milers there! Follow Sean’s pursuits this coming Winter at seandohertybiathlete.com where you can see links to the live streaming of all of the upcoming World Cup events.

Brent Trail of LIttleton was the men’s winner in 27:46 and first woman was Suz Laughland of Silver Lake NH in a time 35:28. Suz also won a 7-Eleven Gift Card for her finish while wearing her White Mountain Miler Singlet!

It’s not too early or too late to sign up for the 32nd Annual White Mountain Miler Half Marathon.  The race date is Sunday, October 29. Net Proceeds benefit the Gretchen B. Hatch Memorial Scholarship Fund.  There is a Military & 1st Responder discount of 20%.  The race features a 5K, Half Marathon, Half Marathon Relay, and a Hand Cycle Division to choose from.  This year there is also prize money, t-shirts, finisher medals, unlimited race photos by Harrigan Photos, and post race celebration with live music at Sea Dog Brewing Company. Don’t forget on Tuesday, August 29, the Cross Country Challenge will once again take place at Kennett Middle School, 5 P.M.  This 5K trail race pits teams from Kennett High School, Kennett Middle School, Fryeburg, Academy, and the White Mountain Milers against each other for bragging rights and the coveted massive bags of chocolate from Coach Tim Livingston. If you don’t win the chocolate, you can enjoy the post race Subway Subs and desserts.  The entry fee for the race is free but potluck desserts will get you lots of thanks!  Check out whitemountainmilers.com for further info.

The Seventh Annual Gary Millen Mile is coming up on Friday, September 8.  The race takes place at the first Kennett Home Game at halftime.  Millen, who died unexpectedly on May 5, 2006, at the age of 53, was head of the social studies department for more than a decade at Kennett High. Coach Millen was head football coach at Kennett and went 186-86 with six state championships.

For this year’s MIllen Mile, Kennett Cross Country and Track Coach Bernie Livingston has once again drafted a line-up of fast men and women willing to run 4 laps on the Livingston Oval under the lights.  The men’s record stands at 4:23.4 set by Zach Switaj of Tamworth, in 2016.  Leslie O’Dell of Albany holds the women’s record  of 5:26.1, also set in 2016.  Come out for a great game and an exciting half-time show!

My condolences to the family of Tim Even of Stoneham, Maine.  Tim, an outstanding athlete at Fryeburg Academy and University of Maine and Maine Athletic Association’s Coach of the year 2014-2016, passed over the bridge last week. Tim was a frequent podium finisher at the Four on the Fourth Bridgton Race and broke the Gary Millen Mile men’s record in 2012 with a 4:28.6.   His record held for four years. Tim was fast, friendly, and shared a smile that started all the way from his toes.  Be at peace, Tim.

“We all have dreams.  In order to make dreams come into reality, it takes an awful lot of determination, dedication, self discipline, and effort.” –Jesse Owens, Olympic Gold Medalist
