On The Run 08/31/17
Madeleine Ryan of Glen likes to help out non-profits by buying raffle tickets to help support them. This summer Madeleine bought a raffle ticket for a half marathon race entry. The raffle was sponsored by the Western Dairy Association. When she won, Ryan realized the half marathon was in Longmont, CO, on July 23. Madeleine received word that there was a special t-shirt that she, and the three other raffle winners were going to wear during the race. Not being sure what a dairy sponsored running t-shirt would look like, Madeleine was feeling apprehensive about her wardrobe choice! If you’re picturing cow print, you’re right!Ryan states, “I finished slower than usual in 2:22 but attribute that to being at 5000 feet of elevation with 80 degree temperatures in a very sun exposed course (I like to have my excuses lined up). I did finish first amongst us ‘dairy ladies’ — no one wanted to call us cows!” The cow print shirt could only have made Madeleine run faster!
Tuesday night running continues at Whitaker Woods. Informal and fun running with a group, 5:30 PM. People run or walk 2 or 3 miles and trash talk about it after. Too much fun for free. Some people are even doing the course clockwise! Hope to see you there along with Kevin Callahan.
A good time was had by all at Ron and Raylene’s 2017 Summer Party! I hear there were swimming races and some hard core ping pong games happening. The food, as is usual for a White Mountain Miler Event, was outstanding and my grandson may have eaten an entire Kearsarge Pie Company/Cathy Dowling Blueberry Pie! Thank you to Ron and Raylene for once again hosting this wonderful day! Rumor has it that Ron could be talked into a special adult running camp? Sign me up!
It’s not too early or too late to sign up for the 32nd Annual White Mountain Miler Half Marathon. The race date is Sunday, October 29. Net Proceeds benefit the Gretchen B. On Tuesday, August 29, the Annual Cross Country Challenge took place at Kennett Middle School. This 2 mile cross country trail race brought teams from Kennett High School, Kennett Middle School, Fryeburg, Academy, and the White Mountain Milers together for a fun and exciting evening complete with racing, Subway Subs, homemade desserts, and awards. The women’s course record, previously held by White Mountain Miler Terry Livingston Ballou, was broken by Emily Carty of Fryeburg Academy in a time of 11:59. Riley Steward of Kennett was 2nd in 12:04 followed by White Mountain Miler Leslie O’Dell in 12:14. The men’s winner was Tim Livingston of the White Mountain Milers in a time of 10:29. Aiden Hagerty of Kennett and Alfie Walker of Fryeburg rounded out the top three places in 11:01 and 11:02. Kennett took first place in both races for the teams with the Milers in 2nd for the women, Fryeburg 3rd, and Fryeburg taking 2nd for the men with the Milers placing 3rd, by one point!
I, for one love, attending this event, especially as a spectator. The energy of the runners, young and, ah, more mature, is just amazing. The three coaches, Bill Reilly for FA and Bernie and Tim Livingston for Kennett, have nearly 90 years of experience combined and they still love what they do. Of course, this and all races couldn’t happen without the volunteers, especially the families and friends of the coaches and the runners. Thank you, all!
Tim Livingston also hosted a camp for high school harriers this summer and is seeing the results in the team running times. The athletes met 5 times a week for a few hours of trails, hills, and speed work. The commitment of the athletes and coach are to be commended. Livingston thanks the White Mountain Milers for once again sponsoring the camp. The Milers say thank you to Tim for his passion for the sport of running.
