Valley Running in Runner’s World

On The Run   09/27/17

I had heard the rumour, but when I opened my copy of the September issue of Runner’s World, it was confirmed.  There on page 9 was a two page spread of our own Kevin Tilton running on Foss Mountain in Eaton. Joe Klementovich/Aurora took the photo, Big Dave’s Bagels was mentioned as Kevin’s favorite post-run fare, and the White Mountain Milers Half Marathon was listed as the local race. You can go to runnersworld.com/raverun to download the photo for your computer’s wallpaper! Congratulations to Kevin and Joe.

The “Beast of the East” or the “Little Beast”,  the Kismet Cliff Run, 5 miles or 13.1 miles, saw a record number of runners and record heat for the race.   Former race director Gabe Flanders spoke to the group of runners and spectators before the start, admitting 38B4A2DF-98D1-4B4A-B4A5-0004B247E9DEthis was the first time we would run the half marathon distance of the race since its beginning because, “why would I?”!  In spite of this admission, Gabe placed fifth overall and first in his age group with a 2:45:40.  There were 46 finishers in the 5 mile race with Nathan Marcinuk 54:07 and Dawn Heinrich 1:04:25 finishing first male and female.  The half marathon distance saw 113 finishers with Tristan Williams taking 1st in 2:16:48 and Haley Heinrich 3:10:28, 1st female. Jeff White of Brownfield tells me he wouldn’t call his five mile event “running” but two hours into it he had an “incredible experience when I heard footsteps coming behind me on the rocky trail and watched as the guy who turned out to be the winner of the race (Tristan Williams) go flying by me hopping rock to rock. I’d never seen anything like that.”  Jeff finished in 2:18:58. Congratulations to all finishers.

Over 150 individuals and teams took part in the 100 Acre Challenge Conquering Obstacles for Literacy this past Saturday and winners were Bethany Mayo of Center Conway 33:28.1, first overall and first female, and Jamie Gillon of Pembroke 35:31.3.  Jo Whittington along with Joann Daly, Charisse Hirschfeld, and Cameron Leavitt formed the team,  Nice Young Man Helps 3 Old Ladies Cross an Obstacle Course, reports this is her Niceyoungman2nd year doing the race, the obstacles were just tough enough, and the food truck at the finish was a nice touch.  “We had the longest team name and we weren’t last” reports Jo.  Check for full resutls at coolrunning.com/results/17/nh/Sep23_100Acr_set1.shtml

The Tuesday night running scene at Whitaker Woods is pretty sparse but this week, K-Dog, aka Kevin Callahan, was there along with Sara Holtby, Joe LaRue, and Roger Marcoux.  Why were there more people there with the heat wave?  Join in next Tuesday for informal and fun running with a group at 5:30 PM.  People run or walk 2 or 3 miles.  Hope to see you there!
