Safety in Running

On The Run    10/11/17

It’s Fall and the weather feels like summer! However, the days are shorter, daylight is here for only about 12 hours right now, and the leaves are falling. Please dig out your reflective gear, headlamps, and watch your footing on the trails. Don’t find out why they really call it “fall”!

Also, while you’re getting out the reflective gear, if it’s not orange, you need to find some.  Hunting season started September15 and continues through December 15. Please be safe and careful out on the roads and trails.

This year’s Thanksgiving Day Race has had a name change so be sure to put it on your calendar.  The Purity Spring Resort 5K, or PSR5K, is set for Thanksgiving Day, Thursday, November 23, at 9:00 AM. This trail race has become a wonderful family tradition with the 5K run, a fitness walk and kids fun run. The race, now in its tenth year, serves as a great excuse to eat that extra piece of pie at dinner. Race proceeds will benefit the Kennett Cross Country and Track and Field Teams. Register online before the November 17 price increase. Go to today.

There’s still time to sign up for the 32nd Annual White Mountain Milers Half Marathon. Race.  Register before October 15 to save and to guarantee receiving a coveted race t-shirt.  There will be raffle prizes, top finishers and age group awards, Halloween costume awards, and special raffle cash prizes.  Race Director Vince Vaccaro will be pulling bib numbers from a tumbler for the money; 2-$100 winners, 1-$300 winner, and 1-$500 winner!  Anyone can win, all you need to do is register to run and be there at the finish! The race features a 5K, Half Marathon, Half Marathon Relay, and a Hand Cycle Division to choose from.  This year, in addition to a race t-shirt, finisher medals, unlimited race photos by Harrigan Photos, race awards and post-race celebration at Sea Dog Brewing Company. Race proceeds benefit the Gretchen B. Hatch Memorial Scholarship Fund.

If you can’t or don’t want to run on race day, please consider volunteering. People are still needed to protect runners and walkers at road intersections and bicyclists are needed to lead and follow the athletes. You’ll hear, “thank you” over and over again and it never gets old.  Please contact Volunteer Coordinator Christie Girouard at 603-447-2328

I had every intention to run at the Tuesday night running scene at Whitaker Woods.  I had my running clothes but no shoes!  I couldn’t run in my flip flops.  Join in next Tuesday for informal and fun running with a group at 5:30 PM.  People run or walk 2 or 3 miles.  I won’t be there, with or without flip flops!

The official White Mountain Miler Sunday Breakfast Run Season starts on Sunday, November 5, at the Dowling’s.  We tried a pre-game warm-up this past Sunday, the Sunday Breakfast Run Pre  complete with pot-luck, trail run, and the return of the Gary Howard Upcycle Recycle Raffle Prizes. The food and laughter were amazing and I won’t be surprised to see some of the raffle prizes reappear at the Christmas Yankee Swap!
