On The Run
If you’re reading this column on Saturday, October 28, you still have time. You can still do it. You can still sign up to run a 5k, a relay half marathon, or a half marathon on Sunday, October 29, at the 32nd Annual White Mountain Milers Half Marathon.. Registration will be available if the race hasn’t filled and number pick-up begins at 4:30 through 6:30 PM on Saturday, October 28, under the “Big Top” in Schouler Park in North Conway. Race number pick-up continues before the race at 7:00 AM again under the tent. Don’t forget your ID, no ID, no race number. I’ll be there on Sunday morning at the race number table. Be sure to say “hello”! You may not recognize me as my team once again goes for the group costume prize.
If you can’t or don’t want to run on race day, please consider volunteering. People are still needed to protect runners and walkers at road intersections and other jobs. You’ll hear, “thank you” over and over again and it never gets old. Please contact Volunteer Coordinator Christie Girouard at 603-447-2328 email@example.com.

Leslie O’Dell of Albany ran a 3:07:42 in the BayState Marathon in Lowell, Mass on Sunday, October 22. Two marathons in one week for Leslie. Superwoman much? Remember when they said one day off for each mile for recovery? Tim Livingston and Darin Brown ran in the Granite State 10 Miler in Concord on Sunday. Tim finished in 56:20 for 2nd place overall and top male master. Darin ran a 62:47 for 5th master and 16th overall. Congratulations are also in order for Darin and the publication of his first book, The Sight of Demons. Darin reports that the only running in the book is; “during the prologue where Hunter breaks his ankle doesn’t make for good press for the running world!” You can order a copy of Dr. Darin’s book at http://www.createspace.com/7683244. He will probably be happy to autograph your copy if you can catch him during a race!

Gossip. Lies, Rumours, and Truths: I’ve learned some people do not want their real names used and from now on some names will be changed to protect the guilty. Is it true that a marathoner in Maine took a knee at the start of a marathon or was he just tying his running shoe?! I heard that Martha Stewart was the official starter of the MDI Marathon as she has a home in the Bar Harbor Area. I also heard that she was not allowed to use the usual “starter’s pistol” because of her past record, and we’re not talking about her running record. Disney Orlando had to cancel races recently because of hurricane season. Lynn and Riley Parkhurst had to cancel their plans to run and opted to travel to DisneyLand in CA instead. Now, DisneyLand has cancelled their 2018 races because of construction the park. I hope to see the Parkhurst Ladies in North Conway at the White Mountain MIler Half Marathon this weekend.
The acorns are so heavy this year you need a hard hat under the trees and you may feel like you’re running on marbles.
Don’t forget your reflective running gear and headlamp on these darkening days.
