On The Run

11/8/17

On Sunday, November 5, Shalane Flanagan, originally from Marblehead, Massachusetts, won the women’s race in the 47th running of the New York City Marathon in a time of 2:26:53.  In recording this finish, Shalane bested her 2nd place rival by one minute and became the first American Woman to win the NYC Marathon in 40 years!  Shalane has been seen in the Mount Washington Valley in the past and has recently released her first book;  Run Fast. Eat Slow: Nourishing Recipes for Athletes.  Congratulations, Shalane and please come back to the valley for a run!

According to Runner’s World, 50,766 runners toed the finish line on Sunday in Central Park, and an impressive 98.9 percent of the starters made it to the finish line.

I’ll always remember David Letterman saying, “The NYC Marathon; just another Sunday run with 50,000 of your friends.”!

The first White Mountain Milers Breakfast Run of 2017-2018 is in the books. The food, as always, was delicious, the laughs were loud and spontaneous, and the running and walking were, well, we beat the rain!

Thank you once again to Cathy and Steve Dowling for hosting these pot-luck events.  Announcements for the special  party dates were announced:  the 5K Turkey Raffle Relay Thanksgiving Race is set for Sunday, November 19 at 10:00 AM and the Christmas Party will take place on Sunday, December 10 at high noon.  Mark your calendar now and look for a special recipe for the potluck.

Dave McDermott of Fryeburg ran the Stone Cat Trail Marathon in Ipswich, MA, on Saturday, November 4, in a time of 5:13:52, besting last year’s time by about 10 minutes and taking 2nd place in his age group.  Way to go, Dave.

Andrea Leonard of Framingham and Bartlett took first in her age group finishing in 4:31:59 and husband Rich Leonard finished in 6:40:39.  Runners in this race could not say enough about the trails, the support, and the views. This is one of those races where registration opens and closes very quickly. Full results may be found at ultrasignup.com.

Leslie O’Dell of Albany competed in Franklin Park in Boston  in the USATF-NE XC Championship Women’s 6K and finished 2nd master, 50th overall.

When I run, I run.  I let my mind wander, my pace, well, is whatever I feel, I can breathe, talk (to a runner or the dog), look around, take in my surroundings. relax. I’ve run with people who ask, “What pace do you want to run?”  I’d name a pace and, they run that pace.  I’m more of a go out too fast, slow down, and finish.  Or, more recently, start slow and go slower.  Tri Tek Race Director Vince Vaccaro is having none of that.  Vince, fresh from directing the 32nd Annual White Mountain Miler Half Marathon, paced a group of runners at the New York City Marathon.  His pace group was the 4:25 finish pacing. His group finished in 4:24:35.

Don’t forget your reflective running gear and headlamp on these darkening days and hunting season.  Great job, Vince and congratulations to you and your pace followers.

Miler Ashley Benes posted some information on a very interesting half marathon and full marathon.  Millinocket Maine, a once thriving Paper Mill Town near to Katahdin is hosting their 3rd Annual Half and Full Marathon on Saturday, December 9th.  This event is Free.  Yes, free!  In lieu of a race registration fee, runners are asked to support local businesses and contribute to the Katahdin Region by staying and dining locally and having a good time.  Downeast Magazine wrote a great story, which is a must read and good deed story.  Seems the first year of the marathon, it was more like a flash-mob marathon greeted by a flash-mob fan club. You can find more info at crowathletics.com/millinocket/ and race story downeast.com/marathon-man/.

“I run so I can eat … And, of course, for sanity and stress relief, but mostly for food … I love food.”  –unknown, but I think it may have been a White Mountain Miler.
