On The Run 11/21/17
About 20 White Mountain Milers gathered for the 32nd Annual Thanksgiving Turkey Raffle Relay. Held at the home of Cathy and Steve Dowling, this is a full on potluck Thanksgiving Turkey Dinner. We arrived and signed in, signing your life away on a liability form and promising not to fall on the rain soaked ice on the back roads. Steve then picks forms from a bucket and each three names on the forms becomes a team for the relay. The rain slowed just before we started out and runners and walkers headed down to Cranmore and back up to the finish, a good 5K distance.
The dinner was, as always, amazing with soup to nuts and desserts, followed by the awards.
Steve gave the history of the run including the move from town and the community center, to Cranmore up Crown Ridge, to Wallis Way. The two years where Live Turkeys were awarded, one to Sue Lathrop whose daughters cried when they realized what was going to happen to that turkey!
Sixth place team members were Arthur Viens, Linda Bittner, and Rich Leonard.
Fifth place went to Cheryl Clapp, Miriam Cyr Dowling-Schmitt, and Sara Holtby.
Fourth place team of Kerry Oedel, Nancy Travis, and first place overall runner Mike Dowling (22:04).
Third place team of Richie Girouard, Joe LaRue, and myself in a time of 93:51.
Second place went to Ashley Benes, Christie Girouard, and “Crispy Bacon”, a.k.a K-Dawg, a.k.a Kevin Callahan in 90:20.
First place and frozen turkeys went to a Rafter of Turkeys (look that one up). Andrea Leonard 1st woman in 24:49, Kristine Reardon, and Dave Oedel in 77:47.
Awards were followed by the turkey raffle and I have one in my freezer right now.
Thank you to the Dowlings for once again hosting a wonderful and fun Miler Event. Steve had special help this year from his grandchildren who aren’t sure what to think of their Gramps running friends.
Next on the agenda is the Annual Christmas Party and Yankee Swap. Once again, this will be a potluck turkey dinner preceded by a run/walk of your favorite distance, and then the drawing of numbers and trading of the gifts. The fun begins at high noon on Sunday, December 10.
I received a late answer to my query, “What are you thankful for in your world of running.” I thought I might save it and change it to a Christmas Wish, but I think it can be repeated then, too. From Coach Bernie and Eileen Livingston, Coaches to Kennett Athletes and White Mountain Milers comes the perfect answer which everyone wishes they had thought of. “We are thankful for the cold weather so Kevin Callahan can’t go shirtless during a race.”
Ah, the life of a race director. Catalina Kirsch, director of the PSR5K, Purity Spring Resort 5K Thanksgiving Day Race, thought she had the flu which turned out to be appendicitis! Catalina has recovered very quickly and I look forward to hear results of the Thanksgiving Day Race.
“Mental will is a muscle that needs exercise, just like the muscles of the body.” –Lynn Jennings, who earned the first Olympic distance running medal on the track by an American woman, a 10,000-meter bronze in Barcelona in 1992.
