On The Run 12/13/17
Oh what fun it is to run, eat, visit, and Yankee Swap Gifts at the White Mountain Milers Christmas Party. Held Sunday, December 10, runners and walkers got out in the snow for some fun and then returned to an amazing turkey feast and desserts. Cathy and Steve Dowling outdid themselves once again hosting about 30 hungry athletes with turkey and all the trimmings. Everyone brought sides and desserts and they were plentiful. The Yankee Swap was full of surprises with a close call on a family dispute and there may be an assault and battery charge, something to do with flying monkeys. There was also a new event founded, chair sitting, or, how many Milers can fit in one chair. This may be a challenge for all future events at the Dowlings.
The next food and fun filled Milers Event will be the January Breakfast Run which is being held on Sunday, December 31. The run/walk begins at 9:00 AM, followed by potluck breakfast. Please join us to begin the New Year. Directions and further info available at whitemountainmilers.com
On the Milers DL are Marianne Jackson who had a bicycling accident while visiting friends in North Carolina, Linda Stetson who is recovering from heart surgery, and Ben Cargill who took a serious fall while running the Moats. We all wish them well, a speedy recovery and look forward to seeing them on the run soon.
This year, the White Mountain Milers have given away $600 worth of the North Conway 7-Eleven gas/merchandise cards ($20 each) to both runners and walkers who placed at races while wearing their amazing White Mountain Miler Gear!
Christmas is near and the club has this wonderful Milers’ clothing for that outdoors person in your life for sale. We have ball caps, sweatshirts, singlets and “T” shirts. Contact Frank Holmes at firstname.lastname@example.org or call 447-4365. And yes, we ship and take credit cards!
Ashley Benes and Kristine Reardon travelled to Millinocket to run in the Marathon. According to Ashley, “The Millinocket Marathon yesterday (December 9) was an experience I will new forget! 942 half marathon runners and 213 full marathon runners. Finished 4:15:21 6th in my age group! We will be back next year. The 7 hour drive home in the snowstorm I could have skipped, but at least I know my new nissan rogue is awesome in the snow.”
So, the marathon was Saturday, December 9. On Sunday, December 10, Ashley had this to say about her run pre Christmas Party Run, “Today Black Cap 8 mile hike/run with some White Mountain Milers before the Christmas party Yankee swap. WMM sure know how to eat and have fun.“
The medals from the Millinocket Marathon were wood burned with words to remember, “Most Run-derful time of the year”!
Race results may be found at 3craceproductions.com and you can sign up for the 2018 race at crowathletics.com/millinocket/
Leslie O’Dell ran the 2.1 Yule Light Up the Night Race at NH Motor Speedway in Loudon on Sunday December 10. Leslie ran well on the ice covered course placing 3rd female in 12:45. Leslie’s son, John Beckwith ran 27:30 on the course, completed by 1414 runners/walkers. There were 903 women and 511 men in the event. I had heard the “Gift of Lights” along the speedway were supposed to be amazing. Leslie said she was too focused on the icy footing to enjoy the lights.
I’m still asking, how about trying something new and different to start 2018? Steve Dowling has been travelling and participating in the Dartmouth Relays in January and would love some company.
