Hello 2018

On The Run   01/10/18

A few White Mountain Milers attended the 49th Annual Dartmouth Relays on Sunday, January 7.  Conway’s Terry Ballou finished first in the 400M Run in 1:06.17, Suz Laughland of Silver Lake was first in the 1 Mile Run in 6:11:00, and Steve Dowling, aka “The ‘Flying’ Moose” was first in the High Jump with a 3’10” jump.  Suz said she was very excited and nervous to run in her first indoor track event, missed her goal (by only 11 seconds!)  but really enjoyed the event.

If you have any doubt about what a great event this is, check out Flo Meiler of Sherburne, Vermont.  Flo, at 83 years young, competed once again and took first in the Weight Throw, Shot Put, Long Jump, Pole Vault, High Jump, 200 meter dash, and 60 meter dash.  Flo holds world records in many of her events and shows no sign of slowing down any time soon!

Leslie O’Dell and her son John recently travelled to the Big Island of Hawaii where Leslie ran in the Hilo 2 Volcano 50K Ultra and took first for women masters, second woman overall in a time of 4:56:08.  Leslie reports it was warmer than here but at 50 degrees (above zero!) and raining, it was pretty cool after gaining 4,000 feet to the summit.

There are a few new races on the local 2018 running calendar and they are all being hosted by Rockhopper Races, LLC.

May 5 and 6 are the dates for the White Lake Ultras. A 2 mile trail loop around White Lake in White Lake State Park in Tamworth features single track trails and some beach sand.  On site camping, showers, BBQ, music, a bonfire, and spectator friendly course are only a few of the highlights.  Twenty four, twelve, and six hour options will be available.  Check out White Lake Ultra on Facebook.  Registration opens in February.

On June 16th, the Chocorua Mountain Race 25K is being organized by Rockhopper Races, LLC in conjunction with the National Forest Service.  The 16 mile “lollipop” course will consist of a 1.3 mile stretch of beautiful dirt road which leads to a fantastic loop over the summit of “The Matterhorn of the EAST” The loop consists of some rolling double track snowmobile trail and single track hiking trail which ranges from moderately technical to “hands on trail’ rock scrambling up and down steep ledges. The race will have approximately 3,500 ft of vertical ascent and loss. There will only be two on course aid stations so a minimum “kit” will be required. Registration will open in February so mark your calendars!  Check out the race on facebook ChocoruaMountainRace/

Another race, the Kilkenny Ridge Race is also being planned by Rockhopper Races is tentatively set for September but more information should be available soon.  Watch for more info on the KilkennyRidgeRace on Facebook.

The White Mountain Miler Breakfast Run for January was actually held on Sunday, December 31 in the frigid temps of the cold snap.  About 15 hearty runners, snowshoers, skiers, and walkers headed down Wallis Way and I wasn’t one of them.  Someone had to stay back and help Cathy Dowling make coffee!  The food, as always, was yummy and the company and stories were hilarious.  The next breakfast run is set for February 4 at 9:00 AM.  Plan to run, ski, snowshoe, sled, whatever, but don’t forget your potluck dish to share.  Check out whitemountainmilers.com for further info.

“A lot of times I’d like to stay in bed in the morning, Meiler said, but then she remembers her former track coach Bill Nedde. ‘He always told meI was capable of better,’ Meiler said.  His words still drive her.”
