Snowshoes, Mount Washington, Spring Races

The 8th Annual Whitaker Woods Snowshoe Scramble was postponed from Saturday, January 13 to Saturday, February 17.  Held in Whitaker Woods, this 4 Mile Snowshoe Race is a fundraising event to benefit the Mt. Washington Valley Ski Touring Foundation.  Over 35 racers took to the trails including many local folks usually seen running the trails.  Patrick Rich of South Hamilton, MA took first place in a time of 26:10 followed by Albany’s Kevin Tilton in 28:50.  Timothy Charboneau of Center Conway took 4th in 30:12.  Kyla Brustin of North Conway was the first female and 6th overall in 34:39, followed by Bethany Mayo of Center Conway in 35:21.

White Mtn Milers taking third in their respective age groups were Andrea Leonard of Framingham MA 40:32 and Ashley Benes of Center Harbor 41:14. Andrea and Ashley both won 7-Eleven Gas Cards for racing and placing while wearing their White Mountain Miler Gear.

Monday, February 26, 11:59 PM  is the deadline to register for the 2018 Mount Washington Hill Climb.  If you have always wanted to run the rockpile, you must sign up for the lottery.  If you are lucky enough to be chosen by the computer, you will hear from the road crew on March 1st that you have been selected. Your credit card will be charged and then the training begins.  

However…if you are not chosen, you have one more chance to receive a race number for the race.  The White Mountain Milers Annual Meeting is set for Tuesday, March 6 at Tuckerman Brewing Company, 66 Hobbs Street, Conway. Social time with appetizers and Tuckerman beer deals, recap of the running year, future club planning and events, membership sign ups, and the all important, Mt. Washington Road Race slots.  The White Mountain MIlers receive spots  as volunteers for the past 30 years.  We park cars, we host runners, provide rides down the hill, and we work from o-dark thirty to give out t-shirts and bibs on race morning.   Preference is given to people who have and will volunteer at Miler Events, Race Directors, and Present and Past Club Officers. Bring a copy of your rejection letter from Mount Washington, too.  Hope to see you there!

Race Director Joann Daly is looking for runners and walkers for the 2nd Annual Chili Cook Off 5K. The race is set for Saturday, April 7th, at the North Conway Rec Center. Registration starts at 8am.  Walkers will start at 9am, runners at 9:30am.  The first 75 participants who register on line will receive a special gift.  

Daly is looking for a big turnout this year.  “We had 75 runners last year and hoping for over 100 this year. “

The race will start near the rec center, loop around the park, up Kearsarge and make the loop around Cranmore.  We are encouraging businesses to create teams of 4 or more (max 8) to compete.  Race fee is $25 for adult, $15 for youths, family rate of $60.  Prizes for Top 3 men and women runners & walkers.  Participants bibs will allow them to get discount pricing into the 15 Annual Chili Cook Off and at participating stores on the Chili Stroll.  Reg online at or stop into Soyfire Candle on Main Street, North Conway Village.

Registration for White Lake Ultra Races is open and closes on Friday, April 20.  You can run 2.4 miles for 6, 12, or 24 hours, solo or as a team relay.  There will be camping, an aid station, chip timing, prizes, and more. See full details and sign up for this race and others at

Tritek Events with Vince Vaccaro have a full slate of events this year starting with the 12th Annual King Pine Tri and Duathlon on June 2 in Madison followed by the first annual Moe Z. Challenge on June 9 and 10. This new event to be held at Chocorua KOA Camping Area features .Off Road Challenges include triathlons and trail runs that can be completed as an individual or team and open to everyone ages 6 and up. Proceeds from this year’s Moe Z. Moose Challenge will benefit KOA Care Camp.and Camp Sunshine in Casco ME. Camp Sunshine provides free of charge retreats for children and their families with life-threatening illnesses.

The next White Mountain Miler Breakfast Run is set for Sunday, March 4.  What could be better than a run, any distance of your choice, followed by a potluck breakfast filled with great food, coffee, tea, laughs, and games. Check out for further info.
