Disney, Trails, and the Rockpile

On The Run    02/28/18

The Cranmore HIll Climb, originally set for June 8 has been changed to Sunday, July 1.  The Loon Mountain Race will be run on July 8 and the    Cranmore Mountain Race will be June 3. That’s a great calendar of mountain running hosted by the White Mountain Milers and Acidotic Racing.  Check out further info at whitemountainmilers.com and acidoticracing.com.

Congratulations to Riley and Lynn Parkhurst of Conway on completing the Disney Princess Enchanted 10K and the Princess Half Marathon at Disney World Florida this past weekend.  Completing both races earned the mother-daughter runners their 5th Anniversary Disney Fairy Tale Challenge title and finisher medals.  Net times for the races was 1:38 and 3:52.

Mark your calendar and set your alarm.  The next White Mountain Miler Breakfast Run is set for Sunday, March 4.  You can pick a distance to run, walk, ruck, or opt for a nordic ski in Whitaker Woods,  I’ve even just driven over for the breakfast!  The festivities start at 9:00 and the potluck breakfast which follows is filled with great food, coffee, tea, laughs, and games. You may have noticed recently that many of the photos with my column have been taken by Kristine Reardon. Who is Kristine Reardon?  Well, Kristine is a wonderful new addition to the White Mountain Milers Family.

“I have to say, the WMMilers are the nicest group of people I’ve ever met! I’m glad I’m getting more involved, but wish I lived closer.“, says Kristine.  Working as a Vet Tech at the Meredith Animal Hospital, a job she loves and finds very rewarding, Reardon keeps very busy.  Running found her in 2010 and she liked the way it cleared her mind of worries. Half marathons and the Eastern States 20 Miler were her first and longest road races.   Running the roads soon led to trail running and sprint triathlons. The swimming was her least favorite part of the triathlon, so the trails won her heart. Kristine feels she’s gotten faster and has now run four 50K (30 mile) trail and mountain races.

Trails are my favorite. There’s something soothing about being surrounded by trees, water and mountains. There are so many trails in NH and I love exploring and learning new to me trails. It’s just so beautiful out there!”

Kristine adds, “I also LOVE LOVE hiking. My dogs are my life, so I bring my younger one, Rogan, everywhere I go and my older one, Drexel, when I do easy short hikes.  I love long days on the trails where we can do 20-30 miles in a day. I’ve hiked all the NH48, VT5 (Vermont 4k’s) and just recently decided to finish the Maine 4k’s and have 2/13 there.”

Somewhere in her busy life, Kristine also gets on her road bike. “You can go so much faster and rack up way more miles than running.”

Kristine says the running community is also what makes running so great. “I’ve met a lot of wonderful people and made a few new friends that’ll always be a part of my life.”

“When I’m not doing any of the above, I grab my crochet hook and crochet what I call dog scarves and headbands. I make them for my dogs and for all my friends’ dogs. I love making these as they are so easy to make, plus they make any dog look very fashionable…haha!”

Hopefully Kristine will be at the Sunday Breakfast Run and we can run and get to see her dog fashions in person.  I think Sky would love a headband!

Remember, if you’re in need of White Mountain Miler Gear, contact Frank Holmes at 447-4365 or email him at fholmesnaep@gmail.com.  Wear your gear in a race, place in the race, have your photo taken and with the finish information send it to Frank.  He will be happy to get your 7-Eleven Gift Card to you.  Frank has a stock of hats, singlets, t-shirts, and hoodies.

March 1st has come and gone.  Did you hear from the Mount Washington Auto Road Race selection committee?  Are you one of the thousand lucky enough to be invited to run up the rockpile? Has your credit card been charged?  Let the training begin.

If you were not chosen, don’t despair.  You have one more chance to receive a race number for the race.  The White Mountain Milers Annual Meeting is set for Tuesday, March 6 at Tuckerman Brewing Company, 66 Hobbs Street, Conway. Start time is 6:00 PM.  Social time with appetizers and Tuckerman beer deals, recap of the running year, future club planning and events, membership sign ups, Miler Running Clothing, and the all important, Mt. Washington Road Race slots.  The White Mountain MIlers receive spots as volunteers for the past 30 years.  We park cars, we host runners, provide rides down the hill, and we work from o-dark thirty to give out t-shirts and bibs on race morning.   Preference is given to people who have and will volunteer at Miler Events, Race Directors, and Present and Past Club Officers. Bring a copy of your rejection letter from Mount Washington, too.  Ashley Benes is still looking for Mount Washington Volunteers, so please sign up to help at this race or one of our many others. Hope to see you at Tucks!

“The Secret to a long and healthy life is to be stress-free. Be grateful for everything you have, stay away from people who are negative stay smiling and keep running.”—Fauja Singh, nicknamed the Turbaned Tornado for his running, completing his last marathon at the age of 100.
