Spring, St Patty’s Day, and Spring?

On The Run    03/21/18

Happy Spring Everyone!  Usually for the first day of Spring, I would celebrate by going for a bike ride or a long run.  This year I went for a ruck, a long walk with a weighted backpack. The walk was 15 miles and the pack weighed about 18 pounds. The weather didn’t feel very spring-like, cold enough that the hose to my camelback froze.  I was out there long enough that it actually defrosted again. The birds seemed to have read the calendar as I saw Robins, Chickadees, and a huge Pileated Woodpecker. I’m once again doing a 26.2 mile ruck in April to honor and in memory of our Fallen Service Members, Police, Firefighters and EMTs, while raising funds to support military families in times of need.  This will be my 29th marathon.  I’m now thinking, where should I go for my 30th?  It should be somewhere special and , of course, fun!

I “raced” in the final Meister Race of the season and then went to the Cranmore Meister’s Party this evening.  I am amazed at how fast many of these skiers can ski. As this 10 week race series is a citizens race, the participants are like any road or trail running race.  There are men and women, fast and faster, all different ages and walks of life and a love of the outdoors and life. The final race also saw the option to race as many times you wanted on two different courses for a fee.  That fee, a donation based payment, was collected for Jen’s Friends Cancer Foundation and $1600 was raised. Thank you to all the hard work of Ray Gilmore and his Cranmore Team for a great season.

A few Milers travelled to Salisbury, MA, to run/walk in the St Patty’s 5K/10K and Pub Crawl on Saturday, St. Patrick’s Day, March 17.  In spite of the wind, they said it was a fun race with lots of green! There were 350 10K Runners and 439 5K Runner/Walkers including 49-year-old Erin Go Bragh!   Mike Bryan finished in 34:16, Christine Smith 35:29, Matt Gavett walked in at 46:38, and Laura Holtby in 46:40.

Terry Ballou recently competed in the USATF Masters Indoor Track & Field Championships at the Wayne K. Curry Prince George’s Sports and Learning Complex in Landover, Maryland.  The championship took place over March 16-18 and Terry competed with the Athena Track Club.

Terry finished third in the 400 meter run in 66:23, 2nd place in the 800 meter run 2:30:65, and her team took first place in the 1600 meter Women’s Relay in 4;54:45 and 12th place team in the overall standings.

Before leaving for the Nationals, Terry reported that she “Tapered today for Indoor Nationals.  And by tapered I mean I only did 3 loads of laundry, walked the dog a mile, cleaned the bathrooms and vacuumed. Oh, and ran 3 miles.”  The life of a runner is just so glamorous!

Have you ever thought about coaching?  Running is so much fun and sharing the love of running with kids makes it even better.  The Lovell Maine Rec Department is looking for one or two track coaches for their spring track program.  Coaches receive a $100 stipend, lots of fun, and the admiration of many parents. Lovell Rec Director Meg Dyer will help in any way she can, but the practice schedule is up to the coaches.  Please email Meg at lovellrecdirector@gmail.com

Coach Bernie is looking for volunteers for two home Kennett Track and Field Events on Tuesday 4/24/18 @ 4pm and Tuesday 5/8/17 @ 4pm.
